Principal's Welcome

Welcome to our school.

Our school is steeped in history, having opened in 1911. This year we celebrate 100 years of education at Miallo! Our school is located in a beautiful location 12 kilometres north of Mossman, nestled amongst canefields, and next to Miallo Creek. At Miallo State School we are very fortunate to have a strong family feel, a supportive community and a dedicated and caring staff. Currently we enjoy a stable student population of around 150 students in Prep to Year 7, and due to our school size, we are able to get to know every student individually. We belong to the Douglas Cluster of Schools and work with other schools to ensure we can achieve what is best for our students.

We enjoy a well resourced school and our facilities include six classrooms, a purpose-built Prep building, a new Resource Centre, new Mulitpurpose Hall, computer lab, music room, oval, tennis court, cricket pitch and cricket net. This year we are adding a volleyball court to our sporting facilities. Our facilities allow all students the opportunity to access learning opportunities to enable them to reach their full potential.

Education is a partnership between the home and the school and parents and teachers work together to ensure our children achieve the best they can be. You are your child’s first teacher, and can continue to be a significant part of your child’s education. Your support will make a positive difference and we encourage you to be involved in whatever capacity you can. You can assist by:

  • Ensuring your child attends school every day: ‘Every Day Counts’
  • Ensuring your child has adequate sleep and nutrition and is organised for school
  • Reading to your child/hearing them read regularly
  • Setting aside quality time each day to talk to your child about school
  • Encouraging, praising and supporting your child’s learning
  • Communicating with your child’s teacher
  • Ensuring that have adequate time and space to complete homework
  • Volunteering in your child’s classroom, tuckshop or P&C
  • Attending parade or assisting with excursions

We expect Miallo students to be well behaved, well mannered and respectful. We are a School-Wide Positive Behaviour School and our rules are:

Be Safe Be a Learner Be Respectful

We have built an atmosphere of respect and trust at the school through positive relationships and clear expectations. We value diversity in our school and strongly believe in the principles of inclusion and equity.

In 2010, our explicit improvement agenda is threefold: improving reading comprehension outcomes; engagement and teaching in science (Science Spark initiative); and to continually challenge and improve our pedagogy (how we teach). Through professional development and curriculum meetings, our staff are constantly striving to enhance their teaching skills and knowledge, to deliver the most engaging, quality curriculum possible. We continue to place a strong emphasis on literacy, numeracy and ICTs. Students also participate in weekly lessons with specialist music, health and physical education, library, Japanese (Year 6/7) and ICT teachers. There are also opportunities for students to participate in instrumental music and various extra-curriculum programs.

We hope that you enjoy your time here at Miallo State School, we think it’s a wonderful school and we have a fine reputation for high academic, social and sporting outcomes. We continue to produce some excellent leaders at Miallo and our students go on to great things. We look forward to welcoming you and your family to our school.

Warm regards,

Dr Anet Kyiah Ridley
Principal
